The Willful Pursuit of Complexity by Kris LeetRediscovering the Vacant-Hole Technique: The Hofdi and Uvdal Tablet-Woven Bands. This amazing and complex technique, dating from the 12th to 13th century, was completely lost to history until the modern era. Sigridur Halldorsdottir saw pictures of the two Hofdi bands and in 1985 published an article (in Icelandic) describing how they were woven. Sigridur taught Dutch tablet weaver Marijke van Epen the technique, Marijke taught it to Linda Malan, and Linda brought it to the Seattle Weavers’ Guild tablet weaving study group. In 2001 the study group finished an intensive exploration of this technique with an exhibit at the Nordic Heritage Museum. This monograph grew out this exhibit, both to introduce the technique to a wider audience, and to help ensure that this unknown technique was not lost or forgotten, again. The Seattle Weavers’ Guild provided a grant to support this project. At the time of its publication (and for many years after) this was the only work in English providing context and instruction in this technique. |
